A familiar face to many in Boston’s Somali and Muslim communities was recognized on the national stage this year as Imam Yusuf Abdulle helped accept the 2026 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award on behalf of the people of Minnesota’s Twin Cities.
Before relocating to Minneapolis, Imam Yusuf Abdulle served as the Imam of the Boston Islamic Center, where he became widely respected for his leadership, community engagement, and commitment to serving families throughout Greater Boston. His years of service helped strengthen one of New England’s most active Muslim communities and left a lasting impact on many residents.
On June 1, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation honored the people of Minneapolis and St. Paul for their extraordinary courage and unity during a period of heightened immigration enforcement and community uncertainty. Imam Abdulle joined fellow community leaders in accepting the award on behalf of thousands of residents who worked together to support immigrant families, defend civil rights, and promote community solidarity.
Today, Imam Abdulle serves as Executive Director of the Islamic Association of North America and remains a leading voice within Minnesota’s Somali-American community. His leadership during challenging times helped mobilize community organizations, faith leaders, and residents to provide support and advocacy for vulnerable families.
For many Boston residents, seeing a former local imam receive national recognition was a moment of pride. Community members remember Imam Abdulle not only as a religious leader but also as a mentor, educator, and advocate who consistently encouraged civic engagement and community service.
The Profile in Courage Award, established by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, is one of the nation’s most prestigious honors recognizing acts of courage and principled leadership. While the award was presented to the people of the Twin Cities collectively, Imam Abdulle’s presence among the representatives reflected the important role faith leaders played in bringing communities together during difficult times.
His journey from leading a congregation in Boston to helping represent an entire community on a national stage serves as a powerful reminder of the impact local leaders can have far beyond their own neighborhoods.
For Boston’s Somali and Muslim communities, the recognition of Imam Yusuf Abdulle is more than a personal achievement—it is a testament to decades of service, leadership, and dedication to building stronger communities.
