Brockton, MA — January 5, 2026 In a landmark moment for Brockton, Moises M. Rodrigues was sworn in today as the city’s new mayor, becoming the first person of color ever elected to the position in the city’s history. His victory marks a significant milestone for a community celebrated for its diversity and cultural richness.
Rodrigues, a Cape Verdean immigrant and U.S. Navy veteran, brings decades of public service and community leadership to the role. Before his election, he served as an at-large City Councilor and briefly as acting mayor in 2019. His journey from immigrant roots to the city’s highest office reflects Brockton’s evolving identity as a multicultural hub.
In his inaugural address, Rodrigues emphasized unity and inclusion, calling Brockton “a mosaic of cultures and experiences.” He pledged to ensure that diversity is represented at every level of city governance and to prioritize issues such as economic development, education, and public safety.
Brockton, often referred to as the “City of Champions,” is home to a population where nearly 40% identify as Black, including Cape Verdean, Haitian, and other immigrant communities. Rodrigues’ election is seen as a turning point, signaling broader representation and opportunity for all residents.
