Minnesota lawmakers at the Capitol in St. Paul advanced a major affordable housing bill this week, marking one of the most ambitious housing proposals debated in the state in recent years. The bill includes $850 million in funding for new construction, rental subsidies, and incentives for developers building low-income units.
Supporters say the legislation could significantly ease Minnesota’s worsening housing shortage, particularly in the Twin Cities metro area where rents have surged. The proposal also includes targeted funding for rural communities, where aging housing stock has made affordable options scarce.
The bill faces debate in the Senate next week, with lawmakers on both sides acknowledging that housing affordability is now one of the state’s most urgent issues.
